A Hasty Retreat Empty
PostSubject: A Hasty Retreat   A Hasty Retreat EmptyThu Aug 29, 2013 6:24 pm

Several miles away from the site of Call MacAleese's death, a manhole cover slid open and a blond haired man emerged from the sewers. Brushing himself off, Almos Lorand looked around at his surroundings to ensure that there were no pesky eyes nearby. Confident that he'd eluded the minions of Iscariot, Lorand gave a mighty leap and rocketed skyward before touching down softly atop a neighboring building several stories tall. Much to his surprise though, the rooftop was not deserted. A lone boy was there, terribly filthy and taking shelter in a cardboard box. He was young, barely even in his preteens from the looks of it. The vampire had very clean memories of a childhood similar to that, wallowing in dirt. Frowning, the former monk adjusted the gold chain around his neck and headed for the edge of the building that faced the direction he'd come from.

"Keep quiet and I won't bother you kid," he said, reaching the edge of the building and sitting down. Removing the letter from his pocket, he examined it carefully only to realize that it was blank. Cursing audibly, Almos considered his ritual as a potential means of unlocking the information hidden within but that would require a few days at least. Still grumbling to himself, he almost missed the child sitting down next to him.

"Whatcha got there mister?" the boy asked, revealing a gap in his front teeth. The vampire returned the letter to his pocket and sent the boy a sidelong glare.

"Didn't I tell you to be quiet?"

Enter from Calls death topic thing.
--------------------------------

Striking across the sky within the confines of her bible pages, the nun wasted no time crossing the vast expanses of the city with the thoughts of recent activities in her head. Father MacAleese was a regenerator, something Iscariot took a bit of pride in as their main way to combat the undead, something she was far below on the physical rating scale, making her conclude that the safest possible way to deal with this creature would be to surprise it or to keep her distance and pressure it.

It didn't take long for Veronica to pick up on the abominations presence, though scouring the city for so long to pick up his trail was a tedious task. She'd have to refine this ability of hers when she got the chance. Either way, she had the vampires location. Now it was just a matter of eliminating it and taking back that letter that rightfully belonged to the church. Catching sight of it on a nearby building, her hands instinctively filled themselves with her crucifixion stakes, three to each hand held firmly between well-practiced fingers. Intent on driving them through the vampires skull, the nun almost didn't notice the small boy on the ledge next to him as her swarm of pages approached from behind.

Forcefully stopping her flying charge, the swarm suddenly came to a dead stop at the edge of the building behind them and continued to twist and turn for a moment before Veronica's shadowy outline emerged from their golden veil. Amber eyes shining out from her black outline with what could only be described as absolute hatred and disgust, the pages dispersed from around her a moment later to reveal her body in full detail.

The childs safety was a top priority, and it weighed heavily on her mind when compared with the possible outcome that might come with it. She'd try to measure the situation more thoroughly before making any rash moves, but her hands were ready to send a stake flying at a moments notice.

"You cant escape the Church, vampire. We hunt your kind for a living."

Though he despised the faith itself, Almos couldn't honestly deny the beauty of Rome's architecture. However, somehow he didn't think that a cloud of golden paper was a usual staple in the Vatican skyline. Groaning a bit, Almos' previous experience had made him quite aware of just what those pages meant. Following them with his eyes, he looked back over his shoulder as a pale haired nun appeared on his rooftop. Accessing Call's memories gave Almos her identity immediately. Sister Veronica Corvis, master exorcist of Iscariot. This was getting complicated. The vampire and orphan looked on silently as she went through the song and dance of divine punishment. Finally she shut the hell up and Almos looked to the orphan.

"I think she's talking to you kid," he quipped before utilizing hynosis to render the boy unconscious. Winking at the nun, he rose to his feet and faced her while holding the boy's limp form under his arm. Gradually, he began to pace the edge of the roof in a counterclockwise patter like a jungle cat stalking its prey. It wasn't really an intimidation move so much as a way to keep the heart of Rome in at least his peripheral vision. He didn't want another priest sneaking up on his while his eyes were on this woman. "Father MacAleese thought the same thing, Veronica. Now get out of my way. The smell of those musty pages is sickening."

The sight of the child succumbing to the vampires hypnotic gaze infuriated her even more, using a child as a shield was despicable. But what could she expect? It was a vampire after all. Keeping a stoic expression across her face with exception of look of utter disgust and hatred in her eyes, she followed the cultist as he moved along the edge. It was smart in that regard, otherwise she could easily surround it. She should have separated the two of them when she had the chance, she saw that now. She was fairly certain her pages could catch the child if the abomination holding him attempted anything, but her body betrayed her mute facial expression as her wrists twisted slightly with the stakes in hand.

It knew her name, a fact that didn't shock her as much as one would think. It was no doubt a result of drinking Father MacAleese's blood and obtaining the memories it held within. A disgusting act, to be sure, but luckily her and the late regenerator had only briefly shared a few moments of interaction together, and even those didn't last more than a few moments, which meant it didn't know much aside from that.

Crucifying the monster on the building across from her was going to be a pleasure, but first she had two objectives. The letter and the child. The vampire escaping would be an acceptable loss if she managed to reclaim what he forcibly took.

"I rather enjoy them. They make the scent emanating from your rotting carcase bearable, albeit only slightly. Now, why would a vampire risk so much over a letter? What's it worth to you?"

The scripture pages split into three groups above her. Two of them moved to the opposite sides of the building to act as safety nets should the mongrel try anything, and she regretted the fact that she couldn't position a swarm behind him to cover all of her bases, but if she released the rest of her pages then changes are everything would fall apart. The third group stayed behind her as a necessary precaution.

The vampire's smile widened as the nun began to follow him around the rooftop. Finally, he stopped, standing on the ledge of the rooftop's far corner with Rome to his left and the nun in front of him. "Sticks and stones may break my bones Sister but you'll need some whips and latex to win my heart," he replied with a wink as the nun spread out her pages into three clumps. The sides of the building were out of the question now, as was path straight ahead through the nun. Oh well, there were other options. "You really think I'm about to tell you that? I know you're pretty but really now," Almos said, using his supernatural strength to break loose a large piece of stone with his free arm. On the street below dusk had finally taken over and a few pedestrians still meandered on the sidewalks below. Cocking his head to the side, Lorand licked his lips. "There's a family down there. Think you can save them both and still pin me down?" With that the former monk tossed the unconscious child over his shoulder towards the street below and flung the large piece of stone at the pedestrians down below. Having thrown backwards, both would now be out of the Iscariot's view. She might very well be able to use those pages to catch both of them, but she'd need to move to a position where she could actually see them to do that. As the stone and child left his grip, the vampire shot off to his right at top speed. He was swift enough to outrun that page travel for a while and with a head start he shouldn't have an issue rushing his way out of the city. "Another day, Veronica!"

The godforsaken coward!

The sudden realization of the very thing she didn't want to happen made the stoic features on her face disappear instantly, melting away to both anger and distress. Her body bolted forward the moment the vampire mentioned of saving them both, dashing across the rooftop in long strides toward the ledge as the vampire rushed off to the right. Two problems and only one of her, but apparently this monster didn't absorb any memories telling him that multitasking was her specialty, and she'd be dammed if she let him go that easily.

Veronica dove forward toward the ledge, spinning like a corkscrew in midair. The spin allowed her to face the direction of the vampires attempted escape route, allowing her to follow up with the multiple tasks set before her. In mid-spin, four of the crucifixion stakes held between her fingers were released as little more than rusted-silver streaks of light, darting through the air toward the vampires back as she fell over the ledge, disappearing from sight. Straightening herself to fall faster, her body was quickly surrounded by the scripture - the three groups quickly having forming into one around her as she fell to further propel her toward the falling child.

The two remaining stakes would be put to a different use than they were normally meant for, and that was the destruction of the large piece of stone falling toward the family. A verbal warning drew the family's attention, but shock and fear made them unable to move. A verbal "tsk escaped her lips as the two stakes were released from the golden sea of pages like miniature missiles, packing strength rivaling the ones previously released toward the vampire, enough to punch through concrete. Snagging the child in mid air a moment later and pulling him against her chest, the stone exploded into smaller pieces from the two stakes impacting it. The family below would get a shower of gravel, but hardly anything threatening.

The pages would make a sweeping arch toward the side walk where she'd release the child as gently as possible against the ground before arching skyward, never stopping or slowing down in its process to get above the buildings and follow the vampires presence should he have escaped uninjured. She regretted that the child had to be let down so harshly, but it was hardly anything that could've been considered severely damaging - he'd have a bruise or two at most.

So much for that mask of stoicism.  The moment he'd put a kid in harm's way the woman had all but abandoned him in favor of saving the little brat and that family down below.  Looking back on this exchange later, the vampire would wonder whether or not the nun would have exerted as much effort to save the boy if she knew what hypnotic commands the vampire had put in his head. Then again, what was one more mentally traumatized homeless person with a compulsion towards extreme violence against women running around the streets of Rome? However, to her credit, the nun did manage to pull off a passing attempt at the vampire's health as she went forward with her good deed of the day.  Glancing over his shoulder to make sure the nun had taken the bait, Almos saw the approach of the spikes but found himself in midair with no effective means of evading them.  Left with few alternatives, he activated his shield to deflect the stakes harmlessly before landing softly in an alley on street level.  The nun was most likely acting on the belief that he'd simply roof hopped rather than ducking into the alleyways below.  Either way, he had his head start and he was going to abuse the hell out of it.  Moving from a sprinter's starting position, Lorand kicked off hard in a dead rush down the alley.  It wouldn't be long before those pages, and the whore, would be on him again but he had a significant advantage in speed to carry him from this accursed place.

Shooting skyward within the confines of her pages, Veronica had no luck with quick glance over the rooftops as she broke the skyline. Her initial thought that the monster was going to take the highroad was apparently wrong, it must've taken a dive into one of the alley's below. Normally, this unexpected turn of events would be a problem, especially with nighttime rapidly approaching and factoring in that vampires operated best in the dark, but her losing sight of the target didn't always mean it was going to get away. He was still within range of her ability to sense his presence and as long as she had that, then he couldn't run or hide. She wouldn't have that advantage for long however, he was moving rather quickly.

She wasn't going to let the bastard escape that easily.

The pages surrounding her grew in numbers as the other bibles within her satchel let their pages free, resulting in a swarming mass of literally thousands of golden pages flooding the skyline and darting down into the alleyways below in a torrential flood of scripture. He might be fast, but while he was on the ground, she had the advantage of flight and numbers. Following the direction she sensed Almos in, the literal flood of pages poured through the various alleyways surrounding the building the child was thrown from, the swarm containing herself accompanying them.

Granted, she couldn't have the pages latch onto something she couldn't see, but should he be in a different alleyway already, coming into contact with one of the pages would be more than unpleasant for the damned thing, let alone an entire swarm consisting on hundreds. She could only hope it would flush him out.

This was becoming more annoying with each passing second. He had a massive advantage in speed but those pages were fast enough to take advantage of their aerial advantage and he was restricted in this alley. He could try and power through it but brute force was such a pain. Much better to simply get out of harm's way for now. Before those blasted pages could fully catch up to him, the vampire sent forth Enkidu towards a rapidly approaching manhole cover. Using the spike to wedge it open, the vampire slid into the opening like a baseball player, the cover falling back into position behind him as Enkidu was removed leaving the scene as if he'd never even been there. It was a smooth transfer of momentum, the former monk continuing onward at his previous speed as soon as he landed on the concrete walkway within the sewers. Smirking to himself, Almos pressed on away from Rome.

Dropping out of her pages in a crouch as the rest converged on her location and lined the walls with their golden radiance, the ever growing darkness of the alley was pushed back by their glow. It was odd, at first. This is the location she sensed he was in, yet he was no where to be seen. Had she mistaken his location? She knew her ability was far from fully developed, but could she had been so far off the mark? The mystery was solved when she noticed a nearby manhole and thought back to Father Moriarty's idea of using the sewer. The old man was on to something it seemed. What else could explain her being directly ontop of where she sensed him and finding nothing? He was below her...

She knew the dangers of getting in close with a vampire, and given the confined spaces chasing after him would put her in, she'd rather not commit suicide. Even if it would give her a slight advantage as well, she wasn't going to take that much of a risk. Rising to her feet, she bit her lower lip out of frustration. She'd have to do this the hard way and search the records to find out about the letter MacAleese was carrying and go from there. It was something that couldn't be ignored. What was on that letter that would make a vampire take all these risks?

Outstretching an arm, the pages removed themselves from the alley walls and flew back into the satchel on the back of her waist, neatly placing themselves back in the covers of the bibles that they were earlier released from. "You escaped divine punishment today, vampire... But next time you wont be so lucky. I'll make sure of that!" The nun was pulled from her angry thoughts when her cellphone rang, forcing her to answer it. Ada had apparently disappeared from the orphanage without letting anyone know. Just what she needed.

Flipping her phone closed and placing it back within her satchel, Corvis turned out of the alley. She wasn't going to follow the vampire in the sewer, but she was damn well going to try and stay within range to sense it, while keeping an eye out for Ada as well. This day kept getting more and more troublesome.
